Online Filing for Affirmative Asylum Applications is Available Now
  • 12.07.2022

Over 8.8 million requests for immigration benefits and other requests were submitted to USCIS in 2021. The aggregate number of forms filed electronically has dramatically grown since the introduction of online filing in 2017. Online applications, petitions, and requests totaled more than 1.21 million in 2021, a 2.3% increase over the 1.18 million submitted in 2020.

On December 09, 2022, USCIS announced that certain petitioners for affirmative asylum are now able to file their Form I-589 online. However, UCSIS still accepts FORM I-589 filing through the mail.

USCIS Director Ur M. Jaddou stated that expanding online filing is a priority for the agency as it strives to improve operations for both the agency and its stakeholders, including applicants, petitioners, and requestors. Accepting online filing for affirmative asylum applications is one of the main goals of USCIS to minimize the existing paperwork.

Please note! At this time, only specific petitioners for affirmative asylum have the option to submit their Form I-589 online. If applicants are physically present in the US, they may use their USCIS online account to submit an affirmative asylum application to USCIS.

An applicant should first check the guidelines on the USCIS website to see if their application may be filed electronically before filing online.

If an affirmative asylum applicant’s file is in proceedings in immigration court or before the Board of Immigration Appeals, they may not file their Form-I 589 online. Applicants who already submitted their Forms I-589 cannot file online as well.

An applicant should first register for a USCIS online account in order to submit an online Form I-589. This account offers a quick and secure way to submit required files and forms and follow the progress of a pending immigration request from the USCIS throughout the adjudication process.
